La Fragancia De La Flor Del Cafe/ Scents of the Coffee Flower (Narrativa (Punto de Lectura)) (Spanish Edition)

With this novel, author Ana Veloso takes us to Brazil at the end of the 1800’s. The story tells of the forbidden love affair between a beautiful, intelligent and independent woman –born to rich feudal coffee growers, and a journalist whose ideals make him an advocate for the abolition of slavery. Their passionate story will carry us through the golden age of coffee plantations leading us to their collapse after the end of slavery. This is a love that is as sensual and strong, as exiting and bittersweet as coffee itself. Description in Spanish: Brasil, 1884.

Poetry

And it was at that age ... Poetry arrived
in search of me. I don't know, I don't know where
it came from, from winter or a river.
I don't know how or when,
no they were not voices, they were not
words, nor silence,
but from a street I was summoned,
from the branches of night,
abruptly from the others,
among violent fires
or returning alone,
there I was without a face
and it touched me.

I did not know what to say, my mouth
had no way
with names,
my eyes were blind,
and something started in my soul,
fever or forgotten wings,
and I made my own way,
deciphering
that fire,
and I wrote the first faint line,
faint, without substance, pure
nonsense,
pure wisdom
of someone who knows nothing,
and suddenly I saw
the heavens
unfastened
and open,
planets,
palpitating plantations,
shadow perforated,
riddled
with arrows, fire and flowers,
the winding night, the universe.

And I, infinitesimal being,
drunk with the great starry
void,
likeness, image of
mystery,
felt myself a pure part
of the abyss,
I wheeled with the stars,
my heart broke loose on the wind.

Pablo Neruda

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Delve into what it was like to live during the eighteenth century by reading the first-hand accounts of everyday people, including city dwellers and farmers, businessmen and bankers, artisans and merchants, artists and their patrons, politicians and their constituents. Original texts make the American, French, and Industrial revolutions vividly contemporary.

My Flower...

My Flower...

My Flower
by Sidney Frances

I used to walk among the flowers
In the June and April showers
As I gazed at the vast selection
I was pointed in your direction

There were roses, buttercups,
Forget-me-nots, and Johnny jump-ups
The morning glories and carnations
Added to this floral sensation

But as I saw them all around me,
Only one could astound me
One I had not seen before
Caught my sight and interest more

This flower had a brilliant smell
It's fragrance I thought I knew so well
The aroma; Oh so incredibly sweet
Filled my body with a pleasurable heat

Curvaceous Celosia... a favorite of butterflies

Curvaceous Celosia... a favorite of butterflies

So delicate and inviting. Hard to not reach out and touch. Velvety. Soft. Luscious pinks and purples, curling and nodding gently in the breeze.

A prime plant for a butterfly garden. Easy to grow. Creates thousands of tiny black seeds and reseeds itself. Plant it and butterflies will soon appear to enjoy it along with you.

Celosia is a small genus of edible and ornamental plants in the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae. The generic name is derived from the Greek word ????? (kelos), meaning "burned," and refers to the flame-like flower heads. Species are commonly known as woolflowers, or, if the flower heads are crested by fasciation, cockscombs. The plants are well known in East Africa’s highlands and called by their Swahili name, mfungu.
